I've just browsed through the quadro fxo gateway admin guide - and it got me thinking.

It appears to be rather similar than a quadro pbx - the only difference is that there's no ip lines and fxs ports.

As far as I know, when using a gateway with a pbx, there's a trunk in between the devices and the pbx automatically configures call routing on the gateway to route any calls to the pbx where the local call routing rules then apply.

Is this correct so far?

Now I'm wondering.. is there a way to connect the gateway to another SIP PBX (not that I intend to.. but I'm often faced with the difficult question of recommending a PSTN gateway). Can that be achieved, and if yes, how would it be achieved since there appears to be no sip registration possible on the device. Would you simply configure the PSTN ports to send calls to userid@pbx:port (with or without registration and with or without credentials based on the actual PBX being used)?

And having taken care of inbound PSTN calls, how would you route outgoing calls from the other PBX?

And since the gateways apparently have voicemail and aa functionality as well.. is there a way to use the voicemail as well from a third party PBX (and if so, how would that be set up), and I don't suppose you could somehow combine storage when you have both a quadro pbx and gateway.

Quadro Gateway can work in general with two modes - Standalone mode or as expansion card for Quadro PBX (as External PSTN Gateway).
In the Stand alone mode (without Quadro PBX) you can configure to send calls coming from FXO to needed SIP destination. For that you need to route FXO lines to call routing (with simple pattern), then create a rule with the same pattern and by using NDS, Prefix fields send call to any SIP destination (call type must be SIP). No SIP registration needed to do that only if SIP destination not required caller phone registration.
You can use voicemail by calling directly to Virtual extension's sip number or by calling to AA then dial an extension number. Can you describe a scenario how you want to use Quadro Gateway to store a voicemails? It will possible but need to be configured accurately smileys/smiley1.gif .

Can you describe a scenario how you want to use Quadro Gateway to store a voicemailsImagine a PBX which needs more PSTN ports and may not have a voicemail.. a Quadro gateway would be a good match I think.

Here's another one - where my current gateway is really letting me down:

I have a PSTN call coming in. Upon detecting that call, the gateway answers the call, then sends an INVITE to my PBX. So, the caller already pays for the call - he pays to listen to the ringback tone of my gateway (which cannot even be regionalized.. they get the US tone) - how do the quadro gateways handle this scenario.. will it first send an INVITE and await a 200 response before connecting the PSTN line?

Sure. Except of the cases when you configure the incoming calls from FXO line to go to AutoAttendant extension, the Quadro will not terminate the call until it has a confirmation from the remote destination. In other words, it will not take the call from FXO port until it gets the "200 OK" from destination party.
