Support of Wideband-Codec G.722

As we can see on market, a lot of IP-Phone-manufacturers are going to so called "HD"-telephony. Just have a look on the latest portfolio from Aastra, Avaya, Cisco, Polycom and Snom. This means no other than going to the wideband-codec G.722.

I have actual three Aastras and two Siemens Gigasets. All of them capable of G.722 but the voice never pass through the Quadro as G.722 since (at least for me) it seems that this codec is not implemented.

Do you have plans that this can be supported in the near future?

Yes, sure. We see the increasing demand for the HD codec (actually it seems to me that higher audio quality should be of the main selling points for the IP telephony systems soon). The G.722 (and the G.722.1) support in Quadro will be published in 5.2.x releases. Note that the HD codecs will work on IP Phone to IP Phone calls only, as the FXS/FXO/E1T1 interfaces cannot support HD audio by definition (as the standard for old telephony is 8KHz).. For the same reason the calls to ITSP would most probably not be done in HD (though Quadro supports that, so if you find an ITSP working with HD codec, you can use that :) ).
The calls to VM and AA will also not be done using HD codecs for now. maybe later we may consider to support that.

G722 .. will mean the Death of PSTN / ISDN technologies or the demise of....

But G722 is becoming prevalent in Oz ... especially where Quadro's and some other sorts of systems that I install...

I think it depends on how you’re going to use the phone. For example a lot of people use G.722 in the VoIP Users Conference (http://www.vuc.me) every week, and it certainly makes the conference a lot more enjoyable for those using it.

I think the recording is done in a quality that also shows the users using G.722 and those who are still on G.711 or G.729, so for that kind of application, the G.722 will certainly sound a lot better for those people who listen via podcast.

And no, we’re not all going to be moving to VoIP tomorrow, but when it happens, because G.722 will have been around long enough (and devices that have it aren’t really all that much more expensive), it’ll likely be like upgrading your CRT to an LCD screen, but for voice.

I’m curious that it happened after you upgrade the firmware, so I suppose that you had g.722 configured by default before the firmware upgrade right? (which enables the g.722 negotiation between phones), so you might be running into a firmware bug, I have find many related to audio problems in the 8.5 firmware version.

In this case I recommend upgrade the firmware phone to a newer version like 8.5(4) and see the results (you can try this with just a couple of phones), also make sure the Silence Suppression is disabled in the Call Manager service parameters. If this still does not solve the problem, please open a TAC case as they may provide the appropriate firmware for your case,
