manuals need and index in the back and it would be nice to be able to enter a word such as "sip registration" or "recording messages on a pc" etc on an electronic version of the manual and be able to go to the topic

You are still able to search the certain words in the PDF file. Acrobat tool does allow that. Open the Find box (or press CTRL+F), type in the desired word or words combination and you'll get all instances of that word in the manual on the right pane.

Additionally there is a glossary at the end which allows you to find all instances of terms in the manual.
